Boohoo 2022 Trend Report: TikTok, Bridgerton and Bandanas

Fashion giant Boohoo has released its 2022 trend report, predicting the essentials for the year ahead, with its buying experts, social media studies, and forecasts from the brand’s musings.

Using sales data, search trends and TikTok views, the retailer has also announced the clothing it believes will make the “biggest comeback” during 2021, stating That the trends of the 90s were most prominent.

Cargo pants, wide-leg jeans and bandanas were the top three items in this category, each garnering a significant number of activations within the retailer’s tracking circle. It reported that Cargo Pants garnered more than 69,000 searches on its site and over 122.8 million views on TikTok, while Bandanas received a total of 105,212 unique searches – a 46 percent increase year over year.

Tik Tok as a Fashion Bible and Item to Watch

In fact, the retailer took to the social media platform to declare TikTok as the “new fashion bible” by saying that “anything has the potential to go viral”. In its report, Boohoo said the app has revolutionized the online world, as users look to the platform for style inspiration and fashion.

As part of its report, it has outlined a selection of the top pieces “to watch for the coming year” based on views and engagement on the app.

The corset came out on top, garnering a remarkable 2.9 billion views so far. The item’s popularity can be credited to a number of factors in pop culture, including Netflix’s Bridgerton, Billie Eilish’s British Vogue cover, and the platform’s shopping hall, each helping transform the garment into a popular outerwear.

Given the search spikes in both TikTok and Google, claw clips and tooth gems top the list as the most popular accessories. Tennis skirts, hoop earrings and boyfriend jeans were also trending items, highlighting the ’90s trend, while chunky boots and jackets each made their mark.

Bridgerton’s influence continues

To uncover the overall trends, which were projected to have lasting effects in 2022, Boohoo turned to its Director of Product, Claire Asher, who provided her knowledge on the trends the retailer is seeing for the year.

Naturally, Bridgerton took Usher’s top spot as it cemented its place as one of the most popular Netflix series of 2021. The series was responsible for the revival of ‘Regency Romance’, which existed in the likes of corsets, lingerie and dress designs. Reflected the look of the popular costume drama. With season two on the near horizon and 8.6 billion TikTok views, it looks like it will continue to be a hit in fashion.

The next trend highlighted in the report was ‘vintage vibes’, with Asher referring to another popular series, Sex Education, as one of its main contributors. Characters from the Netflix show donned ’70s outfits and retro looks, which contributed to the high demand in vintage-inspired finds, such as logo sweaters, chunky trainers, and cycling shorts.

On the trend, Asher said: “Designers and retailers alike have always been inspired by archives trends and the spring/summer 22 collections will be a real nod to the vintage revival. The 60s and 70s are ours. Some spring trends like retro resorts and holidays are key to romance.”

In the end, statement dressing took third place on the list of most notable trends, citing its rise to celebrity status and pop culture. Asher suggests power suits and bold colors to define elements of the trend as essentially business casual with statement accessories.
