Pharmacy chain Boots Ireland has promised to stabilize the price of more than 1,300 products, saying they want to remain affordable for customers as the cost of living continues to rise.
That price promise comes after a study by researchers at Trinity College Dublin and the Royal College of Surgeons (RCSI) in Ireland found that drug prices at some pharmacy chains were significantly higher than those at independently owned pharmacies. She was
Boots said the lines in which the prices are frozen include beauty, health, wellness and kids, and include everyday essentials as well as the items customers often shop for.
But the price freeze excludes prescription drugs, an area where Trinity and the RCSI study found huge price discrepancies.
The list of products spans several categories, such as toiletries, hair care, dentistry, health, wellness and beauty.
Products include Boots branded customer favorites and everyday essentials such as toothpaste, shampoo, nappies and shower gels.
Prices will remain closed till the end of the year.
It also said that thousands of its boot brands are now available for less than 99c.
This comes after Trinity and RCSI’s study found wide price variations and lack of price transparency in the pharmacy sector.
The study found that the cost of some commonly used drugs can be nearly double between one pharmacy and another.
The researchers found that prices at some chain-owned pharmacies were significantly higher than those at independently owned pharmacies.
When asked about studies on price variation in prescription medication, Boots Ireland said the price cuts it was announcing were not related to price variations in prescribed drugs.
Meanwhile, the Health Insurance Authority (HIA) has found that some health insurers were not implementing policies that were in line with what is called risk equalization.
This is where those with health insurance pay a levy that contributes to the €800m fund.
Money from the fund is distributed to health insurers to ensure that people with similar policies pay the same value regardless of their age or health condition.
