Both scams are used to clone your credit card

Cybercriminals work day and night to come up with new scams. Everything usually starts with a message in which criminals, often pretending to be a well-known company, try to trick Internet users into stopping them, without realizing it, from sharing their access codes to online banking.

In recent years, criminals directly impersonate banking entities on duty and send alerts about suspicious account movements or about blocks for security reasons. The purpose is to worry the Internet user so that they share all the data without hesitation and thus steal their money.

Skimming and shoulder surfing

And especially during times like summer or Christmas. Authorities are now warning of two new methods that are ‘gaining’ popularity and spreading among cybercriminals:’skimming’ and’shoulder surfing’.

The first of these refers to the theft of information found on credit or debit cards in order to clone or copy it later and use it fraudulently. To do this, a technological device called a “skimmer” is used, whose size is so small that it fits perfectly in the pocket of your pants.

Characteristics

This gadget is responsible for reading the magnetic stripe of the card on which the purchase is made and collecting the most important information (name and surname of the holder, number, expiration date, and security number, or CVV). To do this, it is placed in the slot of the reader, and because it is so small, it does not attract attention.

They can also use less technical methods, such as’shoulder surfing’, a technique that involves stealing personal data by observing the victim in their daily use of electronic devices. , such as ATMs, payment terminals in stores, laptops, or smartphones—that is, literally looking over your shoulder.

RECOMMENDATION

If you want to avoid becoming a victim of this type of scam, all cybersecurity experts recommend that users be careful with their passwords and not share them freely on the internet. If you receive a suspicious message, it is best to contact the entity or company on duty to clear up any doubts about its authenticity.

Regarding’skimming’, the user is advised to always keep an eye on their card and not to withdraw money under any circumstances from suspicious ATMs. Additionally, it is advised that users review their bank statements regularly.

In relation to ‘shoulder surfing’, the general recommendation is to cover the terminal keyboard with your other hand while typing the PIN. To withdraw money, it is a good idea to check the ATM features before inserting the card to see if anything is fragile or appears to have been added in a suspicious manner.

Another possibility is to use only contactless payment methods, which do not require the introduction of any PIN code and, therefore, do not allow sensitive data to be stolen using the classic shoulder surfing method.
