American actor Bradley Cooper has revealed that he “lost a lot” before having “huge successes” and becoming a father, battling drug and alcohol addiction early on.
The Hangover actor welcomed daughter Lee with his former partner Irina Shayk in 2017.
Speaking on the Smartless podcast, Cooper, 47, said: “I was so lost and I was addicted to cocaine, that was another thing.”
Cooper told podcast hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett about turning to alcohol and drugs when he ruptured his Achilles tendon and “dropped a slash” from the American action series Alias.
Cooper explained that 52-year-old Arnett, who was at the time married to Cooper’s friend and Wet Hot American Summer co-star Amy Poehler, helped him realize that after the pair attended a party together. He was suffering from addiction issues.
The Arrested Development actor was unhappy with Arnett Cooper’s attempts to “average humor” and said he was acting like a “real asshole” during the evening.
Cooper said: “It was the first time I realized I had a problem with drugs and alcohol and this was Will telling me, and I will never forget it”.
However, the star admitted that while he was “completely depressed”, he is grateful that he experienced issues while young and before the peak of his fame.
“I will say this: I had the advantage of that event when I was 29,” he said.

Speaking about the time she spent overcoming her addiction issues and developing her career, Cooper said: “Was still working on self-esteem until a year ago, still do, but I decided Huge successes from 29 to 34, where at least I was able to stand in front of someone and breathe and listen and talk.”
