Brazil prosecutes 250 others involved in marked coup

Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF) opened on 3 May the trial of another 250 people involved in the acts of the coup that took place in Brasilia on 8 January.

In the first phase, the STF will decide whether the members of the third wave of the accused will be made accused or not, which will undergo analysis by the ministers of the court.

Once again, the trial will take place in a virtual plenary session, with magistrates submitting their votes to the electronic system during a pre-established period, beginning at dawn on May 3 and ending at 11:59 p.m. local time on May 8.

The attorney general’s office indicted 1,390 people for participating in the attacks, which resulted in the destruction of buildings belonging to all three powers and public property.

Such defendants may be investigated for a variety of crimes, such as armed criminal association, violent subversion of the democratic rule of law, coup d’état, meritorious damages against the legacy of the association, and the decline of patriarchy.

The analysis of the first group, with 100 condemned, ended on 24 April and, by a majority vote, the members of the Superior Court decided to convict them all.

After the declaration of 200, the exam for the second set started the next day and will end on May 2.

The reporter of the case, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, has also voted to include them all as prisoners in this group.

Groups of hardline supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro staged anti-democratic actions in Brasilia on 8 January, calling for military intervention and rejecting President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s assumption of power.

On that date, marked black in national history, right-wing extremists violently stormed and looted the Planalto Palace, the headquarters of the National Congress, the seat of the STF, and the executive branch.
