Breaking Taboos Saves Lives, Says Dame Deborah James

Dame Deborah James encourages “missing taboos” associated with bowel movements because it “could save lives” by helping people recognize bowel cancer symptoms.

That 40-year-old podcaster, known as Bowl Babe Online, was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2016, and learned in May that she was receiving end-of-life care at her home in Surrey.

Speaking to Shameful Bodies presenter Doctor Tosin, Dame Deborah recounted her experience being diagnosed with bowel cancer.

“I had this image of bowel cancer as an old man’s disease, which I now know is absolutely not the case,” she said.

“Actually, unfortunately, I have met a lot of young people. It is one of the largest growing cancers under the age of 50. It was actually quite shocking. I think it was the last thing I thought it would be.”

When asked by Doctor Tosin about her symptoms, Dame Deborah explained: “The biggest thing I had was a change in bowel habits.

“I started going to poo — we need to say it — eight times a day. And I used to be kind of a girl once a day.

“Then I started getting really tired. I remember drinking too many cups of coffee to keep myself awake.

“Then I started losing weight and I started bleeding. For me it was the combination of these changes that led to an innate tendency that something was not right. ,

Since her diagnosis, Dame Deborah has kept her Instagram followers up to date with her treatments to raise awareness of bowel cancer symptoms.

She has so far raised over £6.6 million for Cancer Research UK, Bowl Cancer UK and the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity through her BowelBabe Fund on JustGiving.

Last month, Dame Deborah announced that she had written another book, titled How to Live When You Can Be Dead, which documents what she learned about keeping a positive mindset when faced with life’s biggest challenges. Is.

Despite not being published until August, the book reached number one on the Amazon list via pre-orders, with royalties going toward its Bowelbaby fund.

The podcast host then released a clothing line with In the Style, with 100% of the profits going to cancer charities.
