Will Brennan doubled home Tyler Freeman, who had hit a two-out RBI drive earlier in the 14th inning, and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Houston Astros 10-9 on Friday night.
The Guardians fell behind 4–0 in the second inning, and did not lead until Brennan’s single ended the long game.
Cleveland tied it at 5–5, 6–6, 7–7 and 8–8, but Houston took the lead each time.
The Astros took a 9–8 lead in the 14th inning when Kyle Tucker singled off José Altuve for the second time in three innings. Altuve started the inning as an autorunner.
After starting down the stretch in the second, Josh Naylor also scored twice in extra innings. He scored the tying run in the 14th.
Xavien Curry (3-0) pitched one inning for the Guardians, who won his 30th game with just one run, the most of its kind in the majors.
Seth Martinez (1-2) pitched the final 3 1/3 innings for the Astros. The four-hour, three-minute match was the longest match of the season for either team.
For the Astros, Honduran Mauricio Dubon drove in a single and scored two runs to make it 7–2. Venezuela’s Altuve scored three goals in a 7-2 rout. Cuba’s José Abreu made it 7–2 with a single and three runs scored. Dominican Jeremy Peña made it 6–4 with a run, Yener DÃaz with an RBI, 3–1. Puerto Rican Martin Maldonado 2-0.
For the Guardians, Dominican Amed Rosario went 6–1 with two runs and one RBI, Jose Ramirez went 4–3 with two runs and one RBI. Andres Gimenez of Venezuela 4-0 with RBI, Gabriel Arias 1-0.
