Burkina Faso arrests man after threatening to kill top journalist

Cybercrime police have arrested a man on suspicion of making death threats on social media against a prominent Burkina Faso journalist.

Last month, a 35-year-old businessman “issued defamatory threats, inciting violence against the person of Mr. Newton Ahmed Barrie, as well as destroying his personal belongings,” the Cybercrime Brigade said in a statement on Monday.

In the recording first broadcast on WhatsApp, a voice says, “Go and burn down his house, completely destroy his house, collect the sand that is left and leave the ground empty.”

The journalist is called a “terrorist” “who doesn’t deserve to live.”

The police statement said the suspect admitted to recording.

It was unclear why death threats were issued in the 1980s against Barry, a Star State television reporter and former editor-in-chief of an investigative publication.

However, he risked the ire of pro-Russian forces last May when he criticized the government’s deal to bring in Russian mercenaries to help deal with the jihadist insurgency on a private television channel.

Barry quit as a television presenter after the 1998 murder of investigative journalist Norbert Zongo and three of his associates were found in a burnt-out car riddled with bullets.

Barry heavily criticized the regime of President Blaise Compaore.

He was appointed as the head of Burkina’s Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) after the fall of the president in 2014, but resigned last year. He turned his critical gaze to the country and the government, enjoying a strong following on social media.
