California is approaching the March 5 primary election

This is the seat that the late Senator Dianne Feinstein held for more than 30 years, until her death last September.

The top four candidates leading the polls in the race for California’s US Senate seat will meet in the first televised debate of the race on Monday night in Los Angeles.

ABC10 spoke with political analyst Steve Swatt for a look ahead. He said California’s “jungle primary” ensures an interesting race as candidates prepare to meet in LA.

Adam Schiff, Barbara Lee, and Katie Porter—three of the four candidates—are Democrats in the US House of Representatives.

Steve Garvey is a Republican and former baseball star.

“The chances are very good that the three Democrats will split the vote,” Swatt said. “And if all the Republicans rally behind Garvey, he’ll get enough support to at least make it through the fall.”

Swatt said the 2024 presidential race has dominated media attention so far this cycle, raising the stakes for debate in the Senate race.

“So this debate that’s happening that, I think, will give Californians who are interested an opportunity to see these candidates; that’s an opportunity for these candidates to get more media attention, some ink, and some live coverage across parts. of the state of California,” he said. “And the first and maybe the only time it will happen.”

This is the seat that the late Senator Dianne Feinstein held for more than 30 years, until her death last September.

Governor Newsom appointed Senator Laphonza Butler to replace him; he announced in 2023 that he would not seek election.
