California regulators fined PG&E $ 125 million for the 2019 fire.

Regulators in California said Thursday they fined Pacific Gas & Electric $ 125 million for their role in starting the Kinkade fire that injured four people and destroyed hundreds of buildings in 2019.

As part of an agreement with the regulator, the California Public Utilities Commission, the company will pay the state $ 40 million and waive the $ 85 million it is entitled to collect from its customers in the state. The commission’s actions followed after investigators from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection determined that the fire was caused by a PG&E power line.

PG&E said it reached an agreement to pay compensation to victims faster, so it can continue to improve its systems, which have caused many wildfires in recent years, including the deadliest camp fire in the state’s history in 2018.

“We will continue our work to make it safe and correct, both through resolving claims related to past fires and through our work to improve the security of our system,” PG&E said in a statement.

Regulatory authorities and courts ordered PG&E to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in fines for bushfires. The utility company filed for bankruptcy in January 2019 after accumulating $ 30 billion in fire-related liability.

The Kinkade fire burned nearly 78,000 acres in Sonoma County in two weeks in October and November 2019.

Officials are investigating the company’s equipment in at least three wildfires this year, including the Dixie Fire, the second-largest wildfire in California history.
