Cameron Diaz ends retirement with first acting role in 8 years

Cameron Diaz is officially ending her retirement with plans to return to her chosen profession.

The star of “Charlie’s Angels” and “My Best Friend’s Wedding” will appear alongside Jamie Foxx in the Netflix comedy titled “Back in Action.” The two actors have previously worked together twice in 1999’s “Any Given Sunday” and 2014’s “Annie”.

Variety reports that Seth Gordon, whose Hollywood resume includes “Terrible Bosses” and “Four Christmases,” will direct the film.

Although details of the project are otherwise scarce, Foxx confirmed Diaz’s casting Wednesday afternoon by tweeting a snippet of a phone conversation between the two actors.

“I’m so worried right now. I’m, like, speeding up the room,” Diaz declared, before adding: “I feel excited, but I don’t know how to do it.”

Moments later, Foxx paired Diaz with NFL superstar Tom Brady, who announced his retirement from professional football earlier this year, only to rejoin the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 40 days later.

Brady quipped Diaz, “I was talking to Jamie, and he said you need some tips on how to retire.” “I’m relatively successful in retiring.”

It is unclear whether Brady will have any further involvement in “Back in Action.” No release date of the film was confirmed.

Diaz announced her retirement from acting in 2018, four years after she last appeared onscreen in “Annie,” which received mixed reviews.

“I’m also semi-retired, and I’m really retired, so I’d love to see you ladies,” he told his “Sweetest Thing” co-stars Christina Applegate and Selma Blair during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Diaz and husband Benji Madden welcomed a daughter, Radix, in 2020. Last year, she admitted that she still liked acting, but said her decision to move away from Hollywood had allowed her to better manage her schedule as a new mom.

“I just looked around and there were so many parts of my life that I couldn’t touch and I couldn’t manage, and I really couldn’t manage, because everything was so huge,” she told Kevin Hart in 2021 Told in an appearance on his “Heart to Heart” podcast. “For me, I really wanted to manage my life by myself. My daily routine is really what I can do on my own. It’s the best feeling.”
