Canada and Qatar meet in Vienna in preparation for the 2022 World Cup

Toronto (Canada), September 22. Canada will face the Qatar team in Vienna (Austria) this Friday in a friendly that will serve the North American team as they continue their preparations for the World Cup to be played between November and December.

Canada has two friendlies scheduled for the World Cup in September: against Qatar this Friday and Uruguay on 28 September in Bratislava (Slovakia).

Friday’s match is Canada’s first to play outside North America since winning the CONCACAF Octagon earlier this year and Mexico qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1986.

In fact, Canada’s first match in Europe will be against Qatar since March 2018.

Qatar is ranked 48th, five places behind Canada.

Canada coach John Harderman has said the games against Qatar and Uruguay will give his players the opportunity to “practice our procedures and systems on and off the pitch” with a three-day rhythm between matches during the World Cup.

Canada’s main novelty is that it will play two friendlies without one of the team’s stars, 30-year-old Jonathan Osorio, who suffers from indeterminate “neurological” problems.

Although Osorio was announced on 16 September as one of the available players for Hardman, on Wednesday the Canadian Football Federation, Canada Soccer, announced his return.

Osorio, a regular in Herdman’s lineup, has missed the last five games for his team, Toronto FC, in the MLS League.

The player has been in trouble since his elbow hit on the head on July 13.

Nor will one of Herdmann’s fundamental players, 39-year-old veteran Ateeba Hutchinson, also be injured, in Vienna.

The absence of Osorio and Hutchinson means that against Qatar, Canada’s captain will be 32-year-old David (Jr) Hoillet.

Defender Donil Henri, although he will travel to Vienna, is a suspect in the line-up as he is suffering from leg trouble.

Winger Tajon Buchanan, who has just recovered from injury, is also not set to play against Qatar or Uruguay.

Possible lineup:

Canada: Milan Borjan; Alfonso Davis, Alistair Johnson, Kamal Miller, Samuel Adecugbe; Ismail Coen, Marc-Anthony Kaye, Stephen Eustaquio, Lucas Cavallini; Jonathan David and Junior Hoylet.

Selector: John Hardeman.

Qatar: Meshal Barsham; Boualem Khoukhi, Tarek Salman, Homam Ahmed, Ismail Mohamed, MW Abdulwahab; Abdulaziz Hatem, Abdullah Abdulsalam, Asim Madibo; Akram Afif and Almoez Ali.

Coach: Felix Sanchez.

Stadium: Viola Park, Vienna, Austria.

Timings: 5.00 PM GMT.
