With favoritism in tow, Italy faced its first Davis Cup series against Canada. Both complete Chile’s group in the final, so Nicolás Massú’s team paid attention to the result between the home players and the tournament’s last champion.
The Europeans were favored because Denis Shapovalov did not play singles and because, even though Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini were not present, they still had a better team than the Americans.
But the Davis Cup offered another surprise and the Canadian team won the two singles, maintaining the series and uncertainty about the future of the group, with Italy the main favorite and leaving Chile and Canada as candidates for the fight for the Davis Cup remained second place.
At the start, Alexis Galarneau (200th) beat Lorenzo Sonego (38th) 7:6, 6:4 in two hours and 22 minutes of play. In the second round, Gabriel Dialló (158th) defeated Lorenzo Musetti (18th) 7:5 and 6:4, thus confirming the confrontation for Canada.
It is a bitter setback for the Italians, who threw a party in Bologna to help their team reach the quarter-finals of the tournament. Given the large number of top 100 players, the Europeans are one of the big favorites to win the Silver Bowl at the end of the year.
However, the high level that the Canadians showed on the indoor hard court gave them hope of fighting to stay in the league and entrusting Chile with this task. And the pressure will be even greater on the national team to beat Italy next Friday, with the task of immediately closing the standings.
