Canadian corporations fail to meet BlackNorth pledge, and we’re not surprised

A year after pledging to diversify leadership positions, the number of black executives, managers and board members at companies such as Rogers and Air Canada has remained unchanged.

A recent survey reported that of the 205 firms that signed to the Black North Initiative, only a few were truly diversified: they stayed with the Old Boys Club. Basically, his idea of ​​reform is not about changing the trading system.

Black North was started by Bay Street businessman Wes Hall in the wake of the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests following the killing of George Floyd in the United States. Aiming to increase the number of black people in leadership positions in major companies, the initiative encourages companies to “promote diversity” in leadership positions by maintaining “corporate structures that perpetuate anti-black systemic racism against black Canadians” tells to keep.

The business world is hostile to black and racial people, especially the poor. This history of capitalism is rooted in slavery, and rewards only a few. Joel Bakken, a professor of law at the University of British Columbia, points to the greed of corporations, yet we have designed a singular economic system based on the corporate model.

This is why there is an urgent need for greater support for what is (we call it) known as the third zone. social and solidarity economy, or SSE), which includes non-governmental, non-profit and value-driven organizations that are autonomous from the state and private sectors. It is a place where market-operated and excluded from government organizations have historically found refuge.

SSE does not follow the growth thesis. Instead, it defies rational choice theory by focusing on political cooperation, not profit, to advance the livelihoods of people and the planet.

SSE Success Stories

Through the Social Innovation Project funded by the Province of Ontario, we have interviewed more than 70 black and racial Canadian leaders at SSE in the Greater Toronto Area and London, Ont. These SSE institutions are not only providing food, education and employment programs, but they are also hiring executives and board members who are a reflection of Canadian society.

Here are three examples of SSE leaders:

foodshare is a food justice organization that aims to end food deserts and contract out racist farmers. Paul Taylor, FoodShare’s executive director, told us: “Inventions of designs and activities work very well for white people, but they’re not working the same way for us, because we’re not on the table to find solutions. So during the pandemic, FoodShare introduced a “dismantling white supremacy good food box” that contained fresh foods from black and immigrant farmers.

FreedomSchool-Toronto Provides youth programming. Co-founder Leroy Newbold noted that: “Black people are the innovators of change” because the state has denied this role. FreedomSchool-Toronto teaches the history of resistance, disability justice, intersectionality, spirituality and land-based education to all Canadians.

Caribbean African Canadian Social Services (CAFCAN) refers to itself as a “B-3” organization: Black-Leaded, Black-Serving and Black-Manded. According to Executive Director Floydine Charles-Friedl, CAFCAN values ​​cooperative economics based on African-centred principles and ancestral knowledge.

These examples are highly successful, and we can move on. They are run by black leaders who have been looking for decades to undo equality and structural racism; These leaders should be the ones educating Canada’s major corporations. They are trained technocrats who run businesses with a commitment to creating diverse cooperative economies.

Alternative models reject the status quo

Mainstream firms that follow a shareholder model are concerned about maintaining the status quo, and that often means they prefer to seek out highly visible actions – such as signing the Black North Pledge – to those people. rather than those that actually promote real change.

And although the BlackNorth initiative is well-intentioned, the business-first mindset fails to critically recognize how many people are alienated from corporations’ hiring and personnel decisions. And to believe that a capitalist firm will value the labor of black people is misguided.

On the other hand, alternative businesses – such as cooperatives, credit unions and rotating savings and credit unions, or ROSCAs – are not made up of people subordinate to financiers, but leaders who seek to build anew. The state should help those leaders by encouraging institutions that prioritize mediocrity, (a general concept describing a sustainable, dynamic set of social relationships to manage resources), informal cooperatives, and other cohesion institutions.

It is time, for example, to bring in disruptive feminist leaders who can shift from “fixing” growth to a truly changing mindset to value local economies. Community leaders can also assist in this project of making equality possible among business leaders.

Until then, it is not surprising when large corporations fail to diversify culturally. The business elite is clearly not going to disturb the status quo.
