At the end of 2014, meningitis almost took Carlos Jaramillo to his grave. He was hospitalized for almost 40 days and sometimes doctors’ prognosis was reserved. For him, getting out of that episode alive was a miracle that made him reflect. He blamed stress and his habits for the illness he suffered, and thought that if he didn’t change his lifestyle he might end up back in the hospital or, worse, die.
At that time, he was a 29-year-old blind surgeon who believed in pharmacology and traditional medicinal treatment. But in search of the reasons why he had meningitis and through his methods of functional medicine (a method that tries to discover the root of diseases) he concluded that drugs and operations are not enough to treat all diseases . He explained that, in order to heal, in addition to traditional knowledge, it is necessary to understand what the main “threats” are to health.
Their investigations, which are always based on scientific studies, point to poor diet and stress as the main cause of most diseases. To prove it, Jaramillo changed his own life. The formula worked and, knowing that his knowledge would help others, he began treating patients with the principles of functional medicine. In his words, he is dedicated to empowering people to take control of their health and change their lives, rather than treating diseases.
After serving thousands and seeing good results in his practice, Jaramillo decided it was important to amplify the message and get it out of the office. He started doing it on social networks, but his dream was to bring all the knowledge in a book, and so, in 2018, came the Metabolic Miracle, which for three consecutive years was on the lists of the best sellers in Colombia. With a clear, fun, entertaining message, but always supported by scientific studies, he explains to everyone, from young people to grandparents, the importance of learning to eat better.
With this book and his messages on social networks (1.6 million people follow him on Instagram alone), Jaramillo breaks the mold of the doctor with a white coat, tie and complicated terms and approaches common people so they can understand that Health. started on their own. Healing does not depend on others, but through our hands. And it starts at the table, in the menu selected. After the success of The metabolic miracle, he published The anti-stress miracle (2020) and How: the art of eating well to be well (2021), which remain among the best-selling books in Colombia and Latin America.
Before being a doctor, Jaramillo was a born scholar and a professional with a strong background in science. He interned at Saint Mary’s Hospital, Yale School of Medicine; He completed a postgraduate degree in biochemistry and physiology at Harvard University; and studied at the United States Institute of Functional Medicine. Despite such a resume, this medical rockstar never stops studying and always keeps up with the latest research in medicine and health.
True to his principles, he does not allow himself to be overwhelmed with work and for it to cause stress. He always had time for his family, for his wife, Adriana, and for his two sons, Luciano and Lorenzo, whom he often referred to as his “teachers.” He is a very good cook, he likes to read and he is a good athlete, his passion is weight training. Every morning early in the morning he meditates and spends time on feng shui.
With his own example and a message that has been raised around the world, Jaramillo leads a crusade to understand that a good life, healthy and with few diseases, depends more on oneself than on a doctor or specialist. His teachings are above duty and passed down from word to mouth. A close friend says that when she goes to the supermarket she hears people saying “no, don’t have that, it’s too processed and full of sugar and chemicals; “You should choose real food, that’s what the doctor said.” That is the magnitude of Jaramillo’s message.
