CDMX Government withdraws women merchants in more than 59 Metro stations

Despite protests, the Government of Mexico City has prevented the installation of women merchants known as “feminist markets” in more than 59 Metro stations, said the head of Government, Claudia Sheinbaum. “ There are more than 59 stations, if I remember correctly. It is civil protection above all, I think we all agree with it: they cannot be on the Metro platforms”, she answered when questioned by Political Expansión at a press conference.

We started as a peaceful protest against economic violence: as women we have fewer job opportunities, so our way of peacefully demonstrating was taking public spaces to be able to pay our expenses.

This morning with saucepans, spoons and slogans, around 30 women demonstrated in the transfer corridor between Lines 2 and 9 at the Chabacano Metro station, while elements of the Citizen Security Secretariat guarded the site to prevent them from settling in. Since Friday, the vendors were notified by the police and this Monday they were no longer allowed to sell their merchandise, said Dulcinea, a young merchant. “We had already heard of operations, we were from the last stations. We were warned but even so for us it is not enough because we do not have income anywhere else as we do here. “Many of us are students, many are single mothers, widows, so it is the way in which we can have income and also own our time,” says the vendor. With phrases such as “fight today so as not to die tomorrow”, the women maintained that they had not been offered options and indicated that they would not accept relocation in spaces where they had no sales. “We are open to dialogue but that they give us something good. We are demanding that, not their ghost places that they send us or that the dialogue table tells us, we give them 15 days, the 15 days pass and there is nothing. “In their dialogue tables it is that; They promise you many things, they give you an appointment, there is nothing in that appointment. They deceive us, they always deceive us”, explained Elizabeth, a woman merchant.

The vendor affirmed that many of those affected by the capital’s police operations inside the Metro are women 50 years of age or older who face difficulties ‘in finding formal jobs. “They want to give us spaces where we don’t sell, where in reality not even people pass by, so they just deceive us. “They have not offered us anything and most of us are already adults, people who go out on the street and they no longer give us work because we are already over 50 years old,” he assured. For her part, Dulcinea pointed out that there were more than 200 women merchants on three Metro lines, which is why the capital government is asked to offer a solution for all of them. When asked what options are being given to the women who settled in the Metro, Sheinbaum only indicated that they are attended by the Government Secretariat, in charge of Martí Batres. “ There are work tables with the Secretary of Government; but the important thing, and all Metro users who had also been asking for it, will agree that they cannot be on the Metro platforms: it is a civil protection issue”, reiterated the president. Around 2:00 p.m., the demonstrators withdrew with the promise of a meeting with the capital’s government authorities.
