One of the 14 towns in Xochimilco has a beautiful soccer field. It is undoubtedly the only one in Mexico City, and probably the only one in the world, that has ever been located inside the crater of a volcano. In the image you can see what I am telling you. It is an area located in Cerro Teoca.
This hill is located in the city of Santa Cecilia Tepetalapa. The place does not have a high crime rate, nor addictions. Its current population is approximately 10,000 inhabitants. The place is generally cool.
In winter, since it is about 100 m above the average for the Valley of Mexico, it reaches temperatures below those recorded in the lower part of the valley. Frosts are common in November. The main crop is corn, although there are also fruit trees such as apple, peach, pear, hawthorn and lemon trees.
There are also cattle and pigs, sheep and chickens. There are still wooded areas around, one place in particular, Tioka Hill, is a walk for those who like to walk and eat outside among the trees.
Few statistics are available about the city of Santa Cecilia. The town is believed to have been formed at the request of Franciscan missionaries in 1704 and 1707. Beans. ,
Juan Manuel Reza Amaya has lived his entire life in Xochimilco. His great-grandfather and grandfather grew oats and alfalfa in the crater of a volcano. About 50 years ago the community decided to establish a court on the site.
He removed the brush, cleared the area and flattened it. Initially the area was small but later they increased it until it complied with the regulatory measures. Since then, matches are played every Sunday in the crater itself, at an altitude of 2,600 meters above sea level. The space became a place for coexistence and recreation in which the inhabitants of this town of Xochimilco could spend a pleasant time. It even goes as far as to say that Nexa had come there for training several decades ago.
There is practically no grass on the field. It has only a few goals without a net and has markings that indicate the boundaries of the playing field. There aren’t even any benches or stands around for the spectators, but that doesn’t stop you from enjoying the game. In fact, that makes it even more special, as it takes place in a totally unique place full of nature. A place of height, literally speaking.
There are several teams or companies that want to privatize the site, but the city has not allowed it because they prefer to keep it as a community space. That is why he has taken care of Tioka with great dedication.
Its crater currently has a soccer field, a sidewalk, an outdoor gym, a basketball court, and trails where residents can walk or exercise.
The town of Santa Cecilia is located at the foot of the Tioka volcano which can mean “the place where the gods live”. By simple association we may call this region “the region of the gods”.
