INGLEWOOD — The Chargers will be without defensive starters Kenneth Murray and Justin Jones for at least the next three games after being placed on injured reserve hours before facing the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday night.
2020 first-round pick Murray was taken off the field after injuring his ankle during Saturday’s practice. Chargers coach Brandon Staley told reporters that the second-year linebacker twisted his ankle.
Jones, a defensive tackle, returned to practice last week as a limited participant, but was sidelined for Saturday’s practice. Staley said Jones’ calf injury was not responding well throughout the week.
Jones has not played against Washington since the start of the season.
Players placed on injured reserve have to miss at least three games.
The Chargers signed defensive tackle Forrest Merrill to the active roster and promoted defensive tackle Breeden Fehoko to the 53-man roster from the practice squad for Monday’s game against the Raiders.
Drue Tranquill will likely start in place of Murray at the middle linebacker. Tranquill saw an increase in snap last week against the Kansas City Chiefs because Murray has struggled on the field this season.
