Chicago area DA Kim Foxx reprimanded by Illinois Republican after Oak Brook mall shooting

A Republican county commissioner based outside Chicago injured at least four people this week after a shooting at Cook County state attorney Kim Foxx at an Oak Brook shopping mall — and sent Christmas shoppers scrambling to safety. Gave.

Speaking just hours after the shooting, Peter Disciani, the commissioner of suburban DuPage County – where the mall is located – accused Foxx of failing to crack down on violent crime in Chicago and other parts of Cook County, resulting in surrounding communities. According to officials, shots were fired inside the mall around 5:44 pm on Thursday after two armed suspects got into a brawl. Police said four people injured in the incident were one of the suspects and three others. Everyone hoped to survive.

According to a statement, the police declared the mall safe later on Thursday night.

Foxx, 49, a Chicago native, has been a Cook County state attorney since 2016. Democrats have faced continued criticism from Republicans, including multiple charges filed against Jussie Smollett in relation to the actor’s hate-crime claim. (Smollett was indicted earlier this month on five of six charges in connection with the case.)

A 2020 Chicago Tribune analysis found that Foxx dropped “29.9% of all charges against felonies, a dramatic increase over its predecessor.” Meanwhile, the Chicago Sun-Times reported in October that Cook County was on track to see its highest carjacking numbers in 20 years in 2021, a 43.5% increase in such crimes over 2020.

Also in October, a group of Illinois Republicans and Chicago-area police chiefs threw their support behind a bill in the state legislature that would allow them to override Foxx’s decisions to relax charges against criminal defendants. .

Foxx took on his critics in an op-ed essay published in the Chicago Tribune in August.

She accused him of “pointing to the blame” amid “an increase in” gun violence in Chicago.

“But pointing out the blame won’t protect us,” she wrote. “I invite my colleagues in law enforcement at the city, county, state and federal levels to join me at a table dedicated to advancing public safety and equal justice.

“If, as alleged, the policies of my office are proven to contribute to looting or anarchy, I will be the first to change them.”
