Chicago Police Officer Shoots 13-Year-Old While Chasing Carjacking

A Chicago police officer shot and seriously injured a 13-year-old boy wanted in a carjacking on Wednesday night.

Chicago police were chasing a stolen vehicle on the city’s West Side at around 10:15 p.m. when the boy jumped out of the car and fled on foot to a nearby gas station.

Chicago Superintendent of Police David Brown said during a news conference Thursday that several officers followed him to the gas station and one officer pulled out his gun and opened fire on the boy.

,[The 13-year-old] Turned to the officers,” Brown said. “The officer then discharges his weapon, hitting the person at once.”

He said the child did not fire at the officers.

Multiple witnesses at the scene told ABC7 that the boy had his hands up when he was shot and that he was not carrying a gun.

“All of a sudden, I saw a little man dressed in all black get out of the car and run toward the gas station, and his hands were up,” said one witness, who asked not to be identified.

“And I saw the cops ran to the boy and started shooting. The boy neither had a gun nor anything,” said the witness.

Police are at the scene where an officer shot and seriously injured a 13-year-old boy wanted in a carjacking on Wednesday.

Another witness, speaking to ABC7, confirmed the report that the 13-year-old was unarmed.

“He said, ‘Raise your hands, raise your hands!’ The boy’s hands were up. There are other people who have seen it. I got it all on my phone – his hands were up. He didn’t have a gun,” said the witness. “They shot him for no reason. “

The boy was given first aid and taken to a regional hospital, where he is in police custody for a stolen car.

No weapons were found at the scene, according to Chicago’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability. The office is investigating the officer involved in the shooting and is reviewing both body cam footage and third-party video and lead-up to the incident.

In The West Side Of The City, The Police Were Chasing The Stolen Vehicle When The Boy Jumped Out Of The Car And Fled On Foot.
In the West Side of the city, the police were chasing the stolen vehicle when the boy jumped out of the car and fled on foot.

Brown said a second suspect who was behind the wheel of a stolen silver 2008 Honda Accord, fled during a police chase and remained at large. The car was later recovered on the road.

Police said the Honda Accord was stolen on May 16 when it was left with its keys in the ignition. Car thieves then used the Accord to steal another vehicle, a Honda CRV, the next day while he was driving with a 3-year-old girl in the back seat.

Carjackers took off in a Honda CRV with the child as the mother grabbed her car and was dragged until it collapsed and broke her collarbone. Brown said the car was recovered about 15 minutes after the girl was safely taken inside.

Any officer involved in the incident will be placed on regular administrative duties for 30 days as a COPA inquiry.

“COPA is committed to a thorough and thorough investigation of the officer’s use of force to determine whether his actions were in accordance with department policy and training,” the agency said in a release quoted by ABC7. ”
