Chico High Wrestling started the season with a double win at Corning. local roundup

Chico High Wrestling defeated Corning 48-36 in the opening session on Wednesday night in Corning.

In the girls’ 106-pound weight category, Corning’s Elise Toste defeated Chico’s Gianna Gammel with a pin. In the boys’ 113-pound category, Corning’s Cannon Gregorio pinned Wyatt Williams; Corning’s Anton Galaviz beat Dylan Hilton by pin at 120; Bryce Powell of Chico beat Ethan Justice by pin on 126; On 132, Cody Rogers of Chico beat Devin Williams by pin; Chico’s Jaydon Rodriguez beat Anthony Orduno by pin on 138; On 145, Gavin Smith of Chico beat Talon Lomeli by pin; David Rudkin of Chico beat Mike Miller by pin at 152; At 160, Ryan Clink of Chico beat Carson Feliciano by pin; Corning’s Ian Brown beat Grant Hotchkiss by pin at 170; On 182 Corning’s Connor Hernandez defeats Aiden Wathen by pin; In 195, Jesse Ibarra of Corning defeats Anthony Holland by pin; On 220, Corning’s Ashton Steward defeated Gusto Horn by pin, and on 287, Chico’s Gio Rico defeated Jose Chambo by pin.

Chico (1-0) and Corning (0-1) will both take next action at the Doc Peterson Classic at the Glen County Fairgrounds in Orland on Saturday.

Willow 5, Auroville 2: Willows and Auroville started their season with seven matches at Auroville on Tuesday night. With no team having a complete lineup, Willows coach Dominic Mercado said Wednesday’s match ensured that the wrestlers had mat time to start the season.

Aiden Edwards of Auroville won his match in the 113 lb weight category, Aydin Madsen of 152 Willow won with a headlock and secured a pin, and Jackson Finch won the match back and forth with a pin at 220 Willows.

There were two matches in the 170 lb weight category as well as the 195 lb weight category.

Jaime Ramirez of Oroville won with the pin on 170 and Luis Gonzalez of Willows won his match on 170. In the 195 Willow’s Anthony Richards won with a pin and a double arm bar, and Willow’s Angel Quintero won with a pin.

Willow will play next Saturday at the Doc Peterson Classic in Orland.

Prep Boys Basketball

Granada 56, Pleasant Valley 51 (OT): Pleasant Valley lost Wednesday night in overtime to Division I Granada in the Rocklin tournament.

Pleasant Valley had a chance to win the game as per rules when the game was tied 49–49. When Granada dismissed the Vikings 7-2, Chase Mitchell’s shot missed the buzzer and sent the game to overtime.

Luke Kramer led the PV with 16 points and added four assists. Mitchell had 14 points and five rebounds, and Bryson Snelling came off the bench to score three points while leading the Vikings in rebounds with eight.

PV (1-1) will next face Golden Valley at Whitney High School at 3:30 pm on Thursday.

Prep Girls Soccer

Gridley 2, Marysville 1: Gridley beat Marysville at home on Wednesday. Natalie Estrada scored both goals for the Bulldogs.

Jena Vilpania assisted Estrada in one goal and the other without an assist. Gridley’s coach Mark Canfield credited Taylor Rickertson for his excellent defense.

Gridley (1-0) plays in Hamilton at 3:15 p.m. Friday.
