CHICO-Chico State University announced on Tuesday that Matthew Dillon, the interim police chief of the University Police Department, will retire on December 31.
Chico State President Gayle Hutchinson thanked Dillon in an email to faculty and staff for his “nearly three years of career in the University of California system.”
After the University Police Chief John Reid announced that he would retire at the end of May 2020, Dillon temporarily accepted the position. On February 17, 2020, the search for a new director was started, and an external search company was hired and the campus search committee was assembled. The campus search chair worked with an external search company to update the university police chief’s job description, which was subsequently released on March 27, 2020. Due to the pandemic, Reid postponed his retirement date to the end of June 2020.
Hutchinson said in a letter to the Chico State Community on June 16, 2020 that after listening to campus leaders, she decided to change the appointment of the university police chief from a permanent appointment to a two-year temporary appointment.
“Vice principal Ann Sherman and I have the opportunity to talk to the lead author of the campus community letter on June 13, 2020 (2020). We had a respectful and direct exchange, which deepened my concerns about some of you Understanding. I also have a broader understanding of the work before us,” Hutchinson said in the letter.
Dillon was temporarily hired in 2020 and served as the co-chair of the President’s Working Group to Review University Police Policy and Practice.
“(Dillon) provided his expertise in law enforcement leadership and showed how much he values different perspectives,” Hutchinson said in a letter to faculty and staff on Tuesday. “During this time, he also helped the university weather the pandemic and established a stronger partnership with the Chico Police Department.”
During Dillon’s last three months as the head, Hutchinson stated that Dillon will help Chico State University evaluate and implement the key recommendations of the working group.
Chico State University will announce a nationwide search for a new police chief, and Hutchinson said the university will invite the campus community to provide feedback on job descriptions.
