From driving a tractor to picking potatoes, a young Chilean midwife “breaks her back” to save the Oceania country.
A Chilean woman has gone viral after opening up about her busy life on a farm in Australia, where she works 60 hours a week for a huge paycheck.
This is Valeria Albornoz, a midwife by profession and currently in the Oceania country thanks to a one-year working visa (working holiday). From there he shares his experience on his social networks.
“The work on this khet (farm) is very varied, sometimes I have to drive a tractor, pack onions, harvest cabbage in the field, pick potatoes, and work on fences as well,” he explained.
Albornoz said, “I work between 50 and 60 hours a week and they pay me 29 Australian dollars (equivalent to 15,467 Chilean pesos) an hour. They are not giving us accommodation, but they do give us their van. Providing space to park, access to bathroom and kitchen.”
“The work environment is great and even though the working hours are long and there are days that are very heavy, it has been a great experience and very good for the pocket,” he explained.
On her Instagram account @valeriaporahí, she said that “during my travels through Australia I have met people who hated the farm, who could not stand for long periods, physical work, being dirty, etc. And this is OK! Not all jobs are for everyone.
Alluding to the doubts of some Internet users, who commented that the working week in Chile is 45 hours and would be reduced to 40, he added that “a full working day in Australia is 38 hours, a day that gives you a decent salary and a living”. Gives. After work.
In this sense, he explained that his work on the farm is one per season, so the entire harvest has to be done within two months. Because of the above, his current boss offers him the possibility of taking overtime, “I’m taking it solely because I’m in the savings period.”
Valeria hopes to be able to travel with the money she has saved from the income from her overtime hours. “I’m not a slave, they’re not forcing me, it’s my decision,” she concluded.
