China has expanded the use of Cuban medicine to treat various types of cancer

The Cuban monoclonal antibody Nimotuzumab has received approval from the Chinese Health Registry to treat head and neck cancer in that country, BioCubaFarma, the state pharmaceutical monopoly that created the drug, reported on Facebook.

This is the third approval this Cuban antibody has received in China. The Asian country’s National Drug Administration has expanded the use of Nimotuzumab to treat pancreatic and nasopharyngeal cancer. This expansion is the result of research carried out by the Chinese-Cuban joint company Biotech Pharmaceutical (BPL) and the Center for Molecular Immunology (CIM) in Havana.

According to official information, one of the main advantages of Nimotuzumab is that it preferentially identifies tumor cells. and abnormal tissue, which allows a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, or exclusively.

Regarding this achievement, authorities in the Chinese province of Hunan recognized Yasser Perera with the Friendship Medal, the Cuban researcher who serves as the scientific director of the Cuba-China Biotechnology Joint Innovation Center in the city of Yongzhou.

According to a post on Facebook by the first vice president of BioCubaFarma, Mayda Mauri Pérez, the BPL company and the CIM “are the pillars of Cuba-China bilateral relations and the pride of BioCubaFarma.”.

Collaboration in the biotechnology sector has strengthened in recent years between Beijing and Havana. In June 2023, BioCubaFarma signed a cooperation agreement with the Chinese company Changheber to introduce in that country a new immunotherapy to be included in the treatment of cancer.

A few months before, in April, the representatives of the Cuban government signed another agreement to open a laboratory in China, which will be dedicated to research in neurotechnology and bioengineering. With this installation, there will be five centers of its type created in China, together with Havana.

In Cuba, cancer appears among the leading causes of death and is worsened by the lack of medicines. There are many Cubans who ask for solidarity to get treatments that are scarce in pharmacies and hospitals on the island.

Currently, some Cuban cancer patients seek help through social networks such as Facebook to find solutions to their problems.

Public health officials must recognize the lack of supplies needed for the treatment of this disease. However, despite the obvious lack of drugs to prevent cancer, Miguel Díaz-Canel recently assured that in Cuba, the care that every patient deserves is given.

The Statistical Yearbook of Cuba shows that in 2021, 26,791 people died from cancer. Of them, 15,450 are men, and 11,341 are women. In men, the main types of cancer are prostate, trachea, bronchus, and lung. In women, the most common cancers are those of the breast and uterus.
