Clifton Park GOP chair blasts town justice opponent as ‘desperate,’ ‘disgusting’

CLIFTON PARK – The chairman of the Clifton Park Republican Committee issued a statement saying that it was perfectly acceptable for the incumbent Republican candidate for city justice to accept the county sheriff’s endorsement.

On Sunday, Democratic and Workers ‘Families candidate Jennifer Jeram issued a statement questioning current City Judge James Hughes’ acceptance of Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo’s endorsement, given Zurlo’s office is presenting criminal and traffic violations to Hughes. …

Jeffrey Jones called Jeram’s statement “a blatant act of a desperate campaign trying to create the appearance of conflict where there is none.”

Hughes and Zurlo did not respond to requests for comment.

Hughes has served as City Justice since 1982. He hasn’t had a rival since 1997.

Jones said Jeram would question “the ethics of a respected lawyer who has never violated ethical standards and imply a nefarious favor for a favor with a reputable law enforcement officer is disgusting.”

“As a lawyer, Ms. Jeram should be ashamed of herself for hinting at any wrongdoing or wrongdoing,” the statement said. “In doing so, Ms. Jeram is reprehensibly questioning the professionalism and decency of all men and women in the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Department uniform.”

Jeram, an attorney for the state’s judicial system, said she was not trying to hint at a nefarious favor for a favor – and she doesn’t believe anything like that.

“From the first day I said that I respect my opponent and all his years of service – this is still the case – but we all make mistakes from time to time, and I believe that it was a mistake on his part,” she said.

Jones said in a statement that the New York Judicial Ethics Advisory Committee clarifies that a judge candidate can personally seek and / or accept the support and endorsement of a wide range of individuals and organizations, including, but not limited to, politicians and nonprofit candidates. judicial office.

But Jeram said the rules of conduct for judges stipulate that a judge must avoid the appearance of obscenity in all his actions and always act in such a way as to build public confidence in the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary.

“In my opinion, accepting the approval of a city judge from the very same sheriff whose office regularly appears before him creates the appearance of inappropriate behavior and undermines public confidence in the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary,” Jeram said.

Jeram said that she did not hint at any illegal activity and did not believe that the endorsement was illegal.

But it was indecent for Hughes to accept that, she said.

“I do not question the professionalism and decency of all the men and women in the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Department uniform,” Jeram objected. “For everyone who knows me, this statement is laughable. I work side by side every day with bailiffs and deputies, and I have a lot of respect for them and their work – ask any of them. “
