Cole, Carpenter send Yankees to Red Sox 13-2; sales injury

NEW YORK ( Associated Press) — Gerrit Cole overtook Rafael Devers and scored 12 runs, Matt Carpenter scored three more and the New York Yankees beat the Red Sox 13-2 on Sunday when Boston ace Chris Sells scored the first. Bar broke his left pinky finger. Turn

The Yankees scored in double digits for the 16th time—no other team has had more than 10 such games—and joined the All-Star break with a major league-best record of 64-28. His 64 wins before the break came third from the 2018 Astros since the All-Star Game began in 1933.

Cole (9-2) threw a slow 99 mph on his first pitch after Cole (9-2) allowed two homers in Boston on July 7. Devers stares at Cole from the dirt, then hits a swinging high fastball.

Cole conceded two runs and three hits in seven innings for his fourth consecutive victory.

Aaron Judge singled out twice and ended the first half with a major league-leading 33 homers, tied with Roger Maris for the franchise record before the break. Judge reached 33 homers in 89 games, while Maris broke Babe Ruth’s single-season record by scoring 33 runs in her first 83 games in 1961.

The judges, Anthony Rizzo and DJ LeMahieu were hit by pitches after Cole knocked Devers down. Lemahieu was in severe pain during the eighth inning with a left elbow injury and left the game, but manager Aaron Boone said the injury was not a concern.

Carpenter had an RBI groundout in the first innings of three runs and added a two-run double in the fourth innings of eight. Carpenter scored 10 runs in the last two games of the first half and has 34 RBIs in 31 games since joining the Yankees on May 26.

Tim Locastro hit a two-run homer off Jake Dieckman in the fourth. Against Boston on the one-year anniversary of suffering a torn ACL in his right knee that crashed into a wall in the wrong field, Locastro went 3 for 5 and stole two bases.

LeMahieu and Judge opened New York’s big innings with an RBI single and then scored a double off Carpenter.

Aaron Hicks hit a pair of RBI singles, including a hit that fractured Sell’s left pinky. Sales screamed in pain and passed out after Hicks attempted to field the liner at 106.7 mph.

Joy Gallo struck a two-run homer after entering the seventh as a defensive replacement.

Sail (0-1) was making his second start since returning from a fractured right rib that he was working on on his own during the major league lockout.

Devers scored 0 for 3 after homing in on the first pitch seen in the last two matches.

Rookie Jeter Downs hits a two-run homer off Cole in the third and also hits a single. Homer was his first in the majors.

The Red Sox finished the first half inconsistent with their sixth loss in seven games and ended the first half on a 6–14 slide, trailing the Yankees 16 1/2 games in the AL East. Before the recession on June 27, Boston won 19 of 23 games.

Sale allowed three runs and two hits in 2/3 of an innings. After exiting the sale, the Red Sox used every reliever except Austin Davis.

Boone said he watched a video of Jason Dominguez’s homer at Saturday’s All-Star futures game at Dodger Stadium.

Dominguez, at age 19, the youngest AL prospect in the game, hit a tying homer with a 415-foot drive on a slider on the letters.

“This is the front door, Dodger Stadium,” Boone said. “Very good for a young man.”

Dominguez, signed by the Yankees as an international free agent in 2019, was promoted from Low-A Tampa to High-A Hudson Valley on Thursday.
