On February 11, the most important sporting event in the United States will take place: the Super Bowl, an event for American football teams to compete for the national championship. Colombia has a place within the great commerce within the movement. The Hass avocado, one of the star products of Colombian agriculture, was the protagonist during the sporting event.
The Corporation of Hass Avocado Producers and Exporters of Colombia (Corpohass) estimates that Colombia will move a total of 1,496 tons of the product from January 22 to February 18, one week after the event.
It is emphasized that the fruit is not only the protagonist before the sporting event, but also during and after, weeks where hass exports increased. Between January 22 and February 4, before the Super Bowl, the export of 946 tons in 45 containers is estimated. This data represents a difference of 105% in terms of exports compared to last year.
During the event, between February 5 and 11, Colombia will send 13 containers with 286 tons of Hass avocados to the North American country. Finally, from February 12 to 18, seven days after the sporting event, 264 tons of product will travel in 12 containers: it is expected that this will represent a difference of 20% compared to what was sent in 2023. The amount shipped during the three periods (before, during and after the Super Bowl) gives a total of 1,496 tons of hash in 70 containers, a figure that shows a growth of 56% of the terms of exports.
Katheryn Mejía Vergel, executive director of Corpohass, assured that the United States is the leading market in the world for this product. “For this reason, we take advantage of events like the Super Bowl to promote our fruit. This is how Hass Origin Colombia is made known as a symbol of sustainability, because each fruit represents the effort and benefit of thousands of families that make up the value chain of this sector; every day, they promote good agricultural practices, in addition to the contribution of agribusiness to the protection of the environment and the development of Colombia,” he said.
Corpohass emphasized that Mexico contributes a lot of avocados to the United States, but the demand means that the country cannot supply all the orders. In this way, the end consumer knows about the Colombian product in this kind of sports area.
Export record in 2023
Corpohass assures that the Hass avocado industry closes in historic numbers in 2023. An export record of 5,125 40-foot containers has been achieved, representing a growth of 26.4% compared to 2022 , the year in which 4,055 containers were sent abroad.
Mejía said that meeting the goal represents an important one in the country’s economy and the sustainability of the sector, because progress has been made in three fields: social, economic and environmental.
Corpohass projections predict this year’s growth of 20% in terms of exports. Currently, the country has 3,615 registered properties where Hass avocados are grown; Given other figures, Colombia has 33,500 hectares dedicated to this plant.
“The sector improves the quality of life of producers and collaborators involved in exports,” said Mejía.
