Colombian Migrant Month begins with a broad cultural agenda

With the initiative of Colombia Nos Une, the celebration began to honor Colombians who, despite being outside this country, continue to contribute greatly in different areas and keep alive the Colombian identity and culture in the distant lands.

During this month, different activities will be held that aim to promote the contribution of Colombians abroad as well as address the structural aspects that cause migration and promote peace.

Among the activities scheduled for this celebration, the Exhibition and Conversation “Looking at the Edge” of the Congress of the Republic stands out, with a photographic exhibition and a space for dialogue that will discuss the comprehensive immigration policy in Colombia.

Also highlighted is the Migrant Film Festival that will take place at the Fondo de Cultura Económica-Centro Cultural Gabriel García Márquez with the screening of the feature film Cantadoras: Memories of Life and Death in Colombia, as well as the film The Invisible Steps through Latin America.

Outstanding Let’s celebrate Migrante afternoon, a cultural event with the participation of DJ Mateo Díez and a cocoa tasting from Catatumbo.

These activities aim to promote reflection, understanding, and appreciation of the richness and diversity of migrant Colombianness, as well as promoting solidarity with compatriots abroad and strengthening ties with their country of origin.

Colombia Nos Une is a government initiative that, through this Internal Working Group of the Foreign Ministry, seeks to strengthen relations with Colombians abroad, improve their participation in the social, economic, and cultural life of the country, as well as provide them with support and accompaniment in their immigration process.

Since the 1970s, there has been a significant migratory flow from Colombia, driven by factors such as internal armed conflict or economic problems, and the main destinations are the United States, Spain, and Venezuela.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs estimates that in 2020 there will be almost five million Colombians living abroad.
