Coming to Spain will have a ‘damaging effect’

Spain faces a period of unknown effects in mid-January. Once the last storms and cold winter storms were overcome, the ‘landscape’ completely changed to bring the unseasonable warmth that would bring records beyond what is appropriate at this point.

Recently, the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and other specialized centers such as have analyzed the events that threaten the winter, with the entry of an anticyclone and a ridge with high effect.

Today, one of the prominent members of AEMET, Dr. Juan Jesús González Alemán, wants to explain an event that raises concern in a difficult time due to the severe drought that affects (almost) the entire country.

He and other experts talk about the possible records of 80 years, and the subsequent explanation of which there are strong reliable records”.

“But given the context of the global warming in which we are (peaking in ~100 thousand years) it *is* unlikely that these types of ridges have been occurring for thousands of years.” “In any case, the focus should not be on that,” he added.

For González Alemán, “the main problem is the increase in the frequency of this type of extreme anticyclonic ridges in the winter, as it happened.” He pointed out that their appearances, which are more common, “take the winter climate slowly”, something that causes a “damaging effect.”

Currently, temperatures more typical in March than at the end of January are expected, with an anomaly of 10 or more degrees above average and there is very little hope of a widespread return of rain.
