Community leaders come to Albany

“What we want is to have stability in New York City for housing, no matter what your situation is,” said Sonia Pérez, of Make the Road, NY.

To demand greater investment in aspects such as affordable housing, health coverage for undocumented communities, and unemployment programs for immigrants, the organization Make the Road, NY, led a group of about 150 activists and community leaders on Tuesday. He moved from the city to Albany to get the attention of Governor Hochul and other state legislators.

“We want the legislature to take seriously our demands and the housing problem in New York City and New York State. That’s why we have two methods around housing: the law of good cause and the bonus fund for vouchers for people who need them, “explained Ángel Vera. .”

As part of their platform, ‘The right to stay and the right to thrive’, they are demanding that the state administration prioritize the freedom of New Yorkers to stay in their homes and the freedom to thrive in the state.

The mobilization was carried out on the annual democracy day celebrated by the non-profit organization and occurred in response to what they consider a lack of solutions to the affordable housing crisis and little inclusion in the Executive Budget.

“In fair housing, we all have the same rights, whether it’s a big building or a small building, that we have the right to a rental contract, and that the rent doesn’t go up as much as it does now through heaven,” added Pérez. “We use almost 75%—80% of our salary—to pay rent.”

For their part, members of the assembly who also traveled to Albany, such as Jessica González-Rojas, said that work is also needed on health and unemployment benefits.

“The fight includes health care for undocumented communities, a bill called coverage for all. It allows New York to receive federal funds. It’s about asking for a federal waiver to guarantee that all immigrants, all people who are here without documents, can enroll in the Essential Plan in New York,” said González-Rojas.
