Concoction about sexual assault or by surgery resident gun-toting surgeon, says LA County

Los Angeles County officials on Wednesday cast doubt on the claims of a doctor-in-training who alleged he was fired for reporting a gun-toting surgeon who operated the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in 2019. An unconscious male patient was sexually assaulted inside the room.

Melanie Cargley, an orthopedic surgery resident at County-USC Medical Center, has raised more than $40,000 on GoFundMe for her legal defense since she took to Twitter on June 6 to detail her allegations.

“As a UCLA medical student I was compelled to watch my supervising surgeon at Harbor-UCLA sexually assault her unconscious, anesthetized black male patient while carrying a loaded semi-automatic weapon concealed at his waist. was done,” she wrote in the post. “I cried silently the whole surgery.”

In a separate post on June 10, Cargley wrote an anonymous report about the sexual assault, but surgeons identified him as a whistleblower, and Harbor-UCLA declined to investigate.

In another June 10 tweet, Cargley said that he was being fired from his LAC-USC residence, leaving him without any income or health insurance and more than $500,000 in student loans.

The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, which oversees four hospitals, including Harbor-UCLA and USC Medical Centers, said Wednesday that Kargal’s claims are “absolutely false,” but it is still investigating the allegations in the interest of patient safety. Used to be.

“Neither Harbor-UCLA Medical Center nor DHS has any record of a complaint, anonymous or otherwise, that matches Cargley’s claim about the alleged sexual assault she said she saw in 2019 when she was at Harbor -The medical student at UCLA Medical Center was on rotation.” The statement said. “DHS has zero tolerance for retaliation against anyone who raises a concern, reports, or cooperates with an investigation about abuse.”

Additionally, Kargel has not been fired for an operating room charge at Harbor-UCLA in disorganized West Carson, but is facing termination for his conduct with a patient and staff at USC Medical Center near Downtown LA. To elaborate, DHS said.

“There is currently no connection between Kargal’s position in the residency program at LAC-USC Medical Center and what he alleges took place in 2019 at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he was a medical practitioner,” the statement said. The student was on rotation.”

In a June 5 tweet, Cargley said he was being terminated for being “unprofessional” towards a patient, but did not mention the alleged sexual assault.

Cargley could not be contacted Wednesday for comment about his allegations or DHS’s statement.

DHS officials also said they wanted to “set the record straight” about Cargley’s claim of a Harbor-UCLA surgeon packing a semi-automatic weapon in an operating room.

“Staff at all DHS medical centers are not permitted to carry weapons or carry weapons in the medical premises,” the statement said. “Limited exceptions to the bringing of a weapon to a medical premises have previously been made in the case of physicians who also serve as reserve deputies.”

Reserve deputy physicians are part of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s team and are fully trained to perform law enforcement tasks and provide life-saving assistance, DHS said,

“Reserve deputy physicians at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center must adhere to strict safety policies, including the proper storage of their handguns in a locked safe box on the medical center campus,” the statement said. “They wouldn’t have a gun on their person during a surgical procedure.”

DHS said operating rooms in its hospitals are “high-activity medical hubs” with a range of staff, including technicians, nurses and surgeons, and where patients are never left alone under anesthesia.

“We are proud of our dedicated team – from physicians and nurses to interns and residents, to our entire clinical support teams – who go above and beyond to provide world-class care,” the statement said. stated in.
