The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said police shot and killed a man on Thursday, October 14, who they said fired at a sanctions officer and then shot other officers during a chase on the 10 freeway. Gave.
The man, whose identity and gender were not publicly released, was pulled east onto the 10 freeway off-ramp on North Indian Valley Drive. Then, for reasons not disclosed in the news release, officers from the Sheriff’s Department and the Beaumont and Palm Springs Police Departments opened fire on the car.
The body of the man and a rifle were recovered from the car, the release said.
There is no report of any officer being injured.
The crime began at 12:24 a.m. when the man shot a banning officer during a traffic stop on Highway 243. Rifle fire hit the patrol car and defused it. The release said the shooter ran into an old Green station wagon east of 10 and ignored attempts by Beaumont police to pull it over, instead firing at them “several times.”
The shooter exited North Indian Canyon Drive and stopped at the off-ramp, where the fatal shooting took place.
The Riverside County District Attorney’s office will lead the shooting investigation, which will be assisted by the Sheriff’s Department’s statement of force investigation.
