Costa Rica: Hackers Threaten the Government, Ask for 20 Million

SAN JOSÉ ( Associated Press) — The Russian gang of hackers Conti Ransomware has threatened the Costa Rican government, saying it will “overthrow” newly elected President Rodrigo Chaves if it does not receive $20 million.

Conti reacted on May 14 to the publication of the United States government that offered a reward of 10 million dollars to anyone who provides information that leads to those responsible for the attacks on various Costa Rican government platforms since mid-April.

“Just pay before it’s too late. His country was destroyed by two people. We are determined to overthrow the government through a cyber attack. We have already done it. We have shown all the strength and power. You caused an emergency,” says Conti’s new threat.

The attacks by this Russian-speaking group have meant that the tax and customs payment systems of the Ministry of Finance are not yet fully operational, in addition to attacking databases in various public institutions such as the Costa Rican Social Security Fund and the Fund for Family’s asignations.

The Costa Rican government refused to accede to Conti’s demands while Carlos Alvarado was in office until May 8. Chaves, the new president, issued a declaration of national emergency to deal with the situation generated by these attacks.

The Chaves government has not yet reacted to Conti’s latest threat and a statement is expected by midday Monday.

In addition to the problems with the payment of taxes, Conti’s attacks have also caused delays in the payment of public officials, since the forms have had to be processed manually.
