Pharmacy sales of the updated Moderna vaccine begin

Moderna updated the COVID-19 vaccine, which is approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), and began selling in pharmacies in Mexico, as announced this Wednesday by its distributor.

“The vaccine will be available on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, and continues to provide an immune response against currently circulating COVID-19 strains, including JN.1,” he said in a statement. Asofarma is the legal representative of Moderna.

This biological, prepared from the latest variants of the virus, will be sold in Mexico as a vaccine. Pfizer, which has been in place since last December, will be applied similarly to those given by the Mexican Government, the Russian Sputnik, and the Cuban, both without WHO endorsement.

According to the authorities, the public system uses 9 million doses of these vaccines for the strengthening campaign 2023-2024 against COVID-19, covering about 25 million people from four risk groups: people aged 60 and over, pregnant women, people with comorbidities, and health workers.

The Federal Commission for Protection Against Health Risks (Cofepris) endorsed Moderna’s vaccine health registration on December 7 with Pfizer, allowing its commercialization in the private sector.

Moderna’s vaccine, according to José Miguel Fonken Quiroga, general director of Asofarma, will be distributed through a vaccination network established in Mexico that includes the public and private sectors.

Thus, it can be used in vaccination centers, medical consulting hospitals, and drugstores and can be used by people six months of age and older.

The vaccine is inexpensive and offers a strong immune response against the dominant circulating variants.

The pharmaceutical company did not disclose the cost of the vaccine, but it may be similar to the Pfizer biological, which, on average, is sold for 848 pesos.

The arrival of Moderna Biological was announced just a day after the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, denied that there was a “critical situation” in the country due to the increase in COVID-19 cases.

Mexico is the fifth country with the most confirmed deaths from COVID-19, with more than 334,000.
