(CNN) – Now that the United States has rolled out COVID-19 booster shots for all fully vaccinated adults, some parents are wondering whether their vaccinated teens should get a booster dose of the vaccine. may be needed – and researchers are working on an answer soon.

Currently, a booster dose of the Pfizer/BioEntech or Moderna coronavirus vaccines is recommended for all adults who completed the original two-dose series of those shots at least six months ago, and Johnson & Johnson for adults. A booster dose of the vaccine is recommended. Those who completed a shot at least two months ago.

About six months ago – in May – when the US Food and Drug Administration authorized the emergency use of Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine for teens ages 12 to 15, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approved Vaccine was recommended for Shortly after that, shots were fired.

“We don’t know yet whether children will need boosters. But we are actively working on studies to answer that question,” said Dr. Flor Munoz, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Texas Children’s Hospital. Said, one of Pfizer’s pediatric vaccine trials.

Munoz wrote in a text message to CNN on Thursday that “following the children at different time points after receiving two doses of the vaccine is part of the study design.”

The pediatric study is ongoing and “the data should be available next year,” Munoz said.

Teenagers may need boosters at some point, but “it’s unlikely they will, because your healthy, bullied teen has a much better and stronger immune response than an older person. When I say elderly I gossip but it’s true,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. told CNN’s John Berman on Wednesday,

Coronavirus vaccines help the body develop protection, or immunity, against the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. That immunity may diminish over time, but a booster dose of the vaccine helps build that immunity back.

For adults, Fauci strongly encourages anyone age 18 and older who has been fully vaccinated with the original regimen to receive a booster shot because of weakened immunity.

When it comes to immunity in teens, “they might go on for too long before they subside,” Fauci said. “They have a very strong immune system. So I wouldn’t be surprised if they would have a defense that would go beyond that six months.”

While there have been several recent studies documenting the weakened immunity seen in fully vaccinated adults, there is not much data on immunity in vaccinated adolescents over time. Having that data – especially for this age group weighing the safety and benefits of boosters – may be helpful in considering whether adolescents may need a booster dose.

“We don’t yet have enough data to recommend boosters for all teens, especially on the teen population,” Dr. Saju Mathew, an Atlanta-based primary care physician and public health specialist, told CNN on Thursday.

“At this point, I’m not personally likely to recommend that my adolescent population get a booster shot,” Mathews said, “because there is a paucity of data—children are at lower risk of severe COVID-19 than adults.” Coupled with – and mRNA coronavirus vaccines, Pfizer and Moderna, come with a small increased risk of heart inflammation in young people.

“However, I have some teens with underlying medical conditions,” Matthews said.

“So, if a 17-year-old has severe asthma, perhaps cystic fibrosis, or some kind of underlying pulmonary condition, I would recommend a booster shot,” he said. “But I’m not comfortable giving a universal, comprehensive recommendation for all teens at this point until we have enough data.”
