scheduled tribe. PETERS (KMOV.com) – A suspect remains in custody after a crime spree spread across several states on Wednesday.
Around 5 p.m., Wayne County, Illinois Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Riley was answering a motorist assistance call on Interstate 64 near the Indiana border when he was shot. As another officer arrived at the scene, Riley was found dead, and his squad car was missing. The car was later abandoned near Interstate 64, WFIE reports.
St Peters Police confirmed that the suspect wanted in the deputy’s death was later linked to a shooting and carjacking in a quicktrip on Main Street. The suspect escaped from the petrol pump after stealing another person’s car at around 7 in the morning. The victim who was shot was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Then surveillance images of the “armed and dangerous” man were released. The stolen vehicle was later found near Highway 70 in O’Fallon, Missouri, according to police. After leaving that car, the suspect allegedly stole a white Nissan Titan truck with Missouri plates of 0WE A43.
The suspect is believed to have been near Highland, Illinois at one time. Then, around 1 a.m. News 4 learned of a hostage situation at Carlyle on Beaver Road, believed to be linked to earlier events. At 2:30 pm, the police confirmed the custody of a suspect in case he was taken hostage at the scene.
Deputy Riley’s body was brought to the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office around 10 a.m. along with area law enforcement agencies.
