Croatian police open fire in clashes at soccer match

ZAGREB, Croatia ( Associated Press) — Croatian police fired live ammunition Saturday during clashes on a highway with hundreds of fans returning from a soccer match in the capital, authorities said. Two fans and around a dozen police officers were injured.

A bus convoy was carrying Hajduk Split fans under police escort after the team lost a league match against Dinamo Zagreb. The buses stopped and a group of fans turned on the officers, according to a police statement.

Hajduk fans blocked the highway and ignored police orders to disperse, the statement added. Police then used live ammunition and other means to repel the fans, he said.

Two fans were believed to have been hit by bullets, although the lives of none of the injured, including officers, were not in danger, police said. The statement did not provide further details.

Local media indicated that the highway from the capital, Zagreb, to the town of Split, on the Adriatic coast, remained closed for much of the night and early Sunday morning. Images shared on social media showed what appeared to be flares, and later fans being forced to lie on the ground.

The Index news website noted that almost 2,000 Hajduk fans who traveled to the Croatian capital for the match against Dynamo did not attend because the police did not allow them to carry their flags. Dinamo, who had already secured the league title, beat Hajduk 3-1 on Saturday.
