CSU at California State University negotiated with employees, halting strike

As of 10 p.m. on January 19, California State University has not reached an agreement with the California Faculty Association (CFA), and the CFA strike is expected to continue as scheduled during the first week of the Spring 2024 semester.

California State University (CSU) announced that a tentative agreement to cover 1,100 skilled trades employees at 22 of CSU’s 23 campuses has been reached amid reports of an upcoming strike.

“After years of fighting for a rate increase, more than a year of tough negotiations with California State University, countless member actions, and two separate statewide strikes, and with five days of strikes coming up next week, our demonstrations at the Union have paid off,” said Teamsters 2010 (the employee union) in a statement on its website last Friday.

The statement continued, “Our Teamsters Bargaining Team has won a historic Tentative Agreement (TA) with the CSU that includes significant guaranteed raises each year of the contract, the return of a salary step system, and each member’s achieved their target step during the life of the contract.”

The agreement reportedly requires ratification from the union membership. It will be brought to the CSU Board of Trustees for approval at its March 2024 meeting, according to a recent press release.

As a result of the tentative agreement, Teamsters 2010 said it intends to cancel its strike that was planned for January 22–26.

“I offer my heartiest congratulations to everyone involved in the negotiations and commend their commitment to the collective bargaining process,” said CSU Chancellor Mildred García. “The work of our employees represented by the Teamsters is invaluable, providing our students with an environment that supports their success, and I am thankful and grateful that we have reached a sustainable financial agreement that pays fairly them for their skill and dedicated work.”

The two parties will reportedly provide more details about the tentative agreement in the coming days.

CSU has not yet reached an agreement with the California Faculty Association (CFA). Although the Teamsters 2010 protest stopped, the CFA strike is expected to continue as scheduled in the first week of the spring semester.
