Cuba revokes the Puerto Rican people’s inalienable right to self-determination and independence

Bali, Indonesia, May 26, 2023.- “The issue of Puerto Rico’s colonial situation, which must be resolved urgently and according to the mandate of the UN”, warned Ambassador Yusnier Romero, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Permanent Mission of Cuba before the Ambassador. United Nations, during the Regional Seminar on Decolonization , held in this Asian nation.

In his speech, Romero Puentes remembered in 2023 51 years after the adoption of the first resolution on the question of the colony of Puerto Rico. However, despite multiple efforts, the people of Puerto Rico continue to be unable to exercise their legitimate right to true self-determination.

The Cuban representative explained that there have already been 40 resolutions or decisions on the subject that confirm the inalienable right of the people of Puerto Rico to self-determination and independence, according to resolution 1514 (15) of the General Assembly of Nations.

He added that the Republic of Puerto Rico, imposed more than 60 years ago, was nothing more than a sham and a way for the United States government to exercise total control over this sister island of the Antilles and a mask act of clear colonial rule.

“Cuba confirms the inalienable right of Puerto Ricans to self-determination and independence, according to resolution 1514 (15) of the General Assembly, and the applicability of the fundamental principles of said resolution to clarify the question of Puerto Rico.” .
