The police report released by América TeVé says that on Wednesday night an off-duty officer of the Miami-Dade Police Department was traveling west on Coral Way and turned left onto the Highway 826 on-ramp when he was hit by a car traveling east on Coral Way.
According to Ángel Rodríguez, spokesman for the Miami-Dade police, after the accident the “individual fled the scene and soon abandoned the vehicle and continued walking. “Our officers immediately set up a perimeter in the area and located and took him into custody.”
Instead, the spokesperson indicated: “If you are involved in a car accident, please stay at the scene. Call 911, give first aid; “That is something that this individual did not do and in this case, what is most shocking is that a police officer was involved.”
Jaime Ulloa appeared Thursday in Miami-Dade criminal court on three charges, including driving with an invalid license, leaving the scene of an accident and causing serious injury.
Judge Mindy S. Glazer set bail at $2,500.
The injured officer was taken to the Ryder Trauma Center where it is now in a stable condition.
“We always warn all our drivers that, please, they cannot escape after an accident. Driving is a privilege and not a right. There are laws to follow,” said police spokesman Ángel Rodríguez.
