Daniil Andrade Helps Bonita Football Grow Beyond Charter Oak

La Verne >> You might be able to include Bonita High School quarterback Daniel Andrade a few times, but as Charter Oak found in Friday’s Mountain West League opener, it’s not good enough.

Andrade wasn’t firing on all cylinders, and the Chargers’ defense had a lot to do with it, but he made a timely pass when Bonita was called in to lead the way to a 21-10 victory.

In the four-team league, Bonita improved to 7–1 and 1–0, with Charter Oak falling 5–3 and 0–1. In other league games, Ayala (7–1, 1–0) defeated Alta Loma (6–2, 0–1), 24–6. Bonita and Ayala will meet in the league finale in Week 10.

Andrade completed 17 of 27 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns, and running back, Kalim Mikhail scored twice and ran for 69 yards.

The Chargers cut Bonita’s lead in the middle of the third quarter to 14-7 on Zachary Black’s 2-yard touchdown run, and then added Luis Marin’s 27-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to make it a four-point game. Yes, Andrade replied.

The junior quarterback took the game away by finding himself alone in the middle of the game and extended his lead to 11 points to complete a 19-yard touchdown, with 4:34 left and it sealed it.

“Daniel is really special and the reason he didn’t look his best is because of the job[Charter Oak]did on defense,” Bonita’s coach Steve Bogan said. “It’s kind of tough because they took a good chunk of the stuff that we tried to get away with and we had to find things that we could do.

“On the last one (touchdown pass to Portillo) we went back in the playbook on a route and Portillo made a slight adjustment to it. He remembered something from a month ago and he and Daniels were on the same page. So, this was good.”

Even Andrade had praised the Chargers for their defence.

“They were really solid up front,” Andrade said. “They kept sending heat. I just had to keep taking hits and keep firing them (passes). “

Black ran 21 times for 98 yards and a TD, but the Bearcats’ defense really worked him every yard as he closed the Chargers in the first half.

Andrade got the Bearcats to go on his opening drive with several short passes, with Mikhail completing the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run and a 7-0 lead.

Charter Oak twice had the ball inside the Bearcats 25, but each time came up empty, rolling the ball down the side.

It was costly because even though the Chargers’ defense had worked well to limit Andrade more than halfway through, Junior went back to work, adding on a 43-yard pass that would set up another touchdown.

After Andrade gave Mikhail a handshake, he just waited and found him open to the left for a 7-yard touchdown pass and took a 14-0 lead with 2:21.
