Actor David Tennant will play former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko in a new ITV drama.
Litvinenko died in 2006 in London from poisoning with a rare radioactive substance.
The play, Litvinenko, will tell the story of his widow Marina as she seeks to persuade the British government to publicly name her husband’s killers and accept Russia’s role in his assassination.
It will also focus on the police officers who worked for years to prove them responsible for the murder.
Actress Margarita Levieva will play the role of Marina.
“Litvinenko is being created with the support of several key individuals involved in the investigation and subsequent public investigation,” ITV said in a statement.
The program is written by George Kay and executive producer is Patrick Spence.
“It’s a privilege, once in a career opportunity to tell a story about a family and a police team that has shown so much courage and resilience that it has inspired us all,” Spence said.
Kay said, “At the end of 2006, Alexander Litvinenko was a living witness to his own murder.
“He handed over the details of what happened to him to the Metropolitan Police on the day of his death.
“It took those cops and their remarkable widow Marina Litvinenko a decade to confirm those claims.
“His stamina, hard work and bravery make this not only an essential story of our times but a privilege to be asked to write.”
