WASHINGTON, DC ( Associated Press) — DC United has pushed Christian Benteke on a permanent transfer from Crystal Palace.
Benteke was signed with a club option for 2025 through 2024. He will join the club once he receives his visa and transfer papers.
Benteke, 31, has played in the Premier League for the past 10 seasons, including with Aston Villa, Liverpool and Crystal Palace. He has played in 280 Premier League games with a total of 86 goals and 23 assists.
“Christian is a top player who has played at the highest level for a long time,” United coach Wayne Rooney said in a statement on Friday. “His experience and ability to score goals and help the team will be invaluable. It’s exciting for the team and me to bring him in and play. He will make a big difference.”
After a $34 million transfer from Liverpool, Benteke played six seasons for Crystal Palace, playing 177 games in all competitions with 37 goals and 12 assists.
“We are finding an elite striker in Christian and completing this signing on the transfer deadline is a great achievement for the club,” said general manager Lucy Rushton. “Christian is a dynamic forward who has scored goals at the highest levels. His strength and power will make him the centerpiece of our team and his ability to add to the game will be a valuable asset to us.”
Benteke has also played for his native Belgium since 2010, scoring 18 goals and making three assists in 45 games. He played for Belgium in Euro 2016 and 2020.
