An Oakland man was shot and killed on a street near Lake Merritt on Friday night, police said. This was the 123rd criminal homicide in Oakland this year.
The police department said a report of the shootings sent officers to the 1400 block of Lakeshore Avenue just after 8:15 p.m. The department said officers found an adult male with gunshot wounds. Police said fire brigade and ambulance personnel were also sent for treatment, but the man later died in hospital.
Police said they were hiding the name of the victim, a resident of Oakland, until they informed his family members. He did not provide any further details of his investigation.
The Oakland Police Department has reported 134 murders in 2021, of which 11 were found to have been committed in self-defense, accidental or otherwise non-criminal. This is the highest total in more than a decade.
