Actress Deepika Padukone Calls her Gehryan character ‘raw and real’ and admits that she had to dig deep within herself to play her, even revisiting some of the happy moments from her past relationships. During the trailer launch of the film, she also addressed intimate scenes in the film and director Shakun Batra made the actors feel safe and secure to portray such vulnerability on screen.
The actor talked about shooting intimate scenes Shakun Batra directed, Explaining that it would have been difficult if the director didn’t make her and the rest of the cast feel safe and secure. Deepika said that doing jewelry was not easy, because showing intimacy is not easy!
She said, “I don’t think it would be possible without the comfort that he (Shakun) has given to all of us. You feel like you are working in an extremely safe and secure environment because intimacy is not easy. It’s something like this.” It’s not something we’ve ever experienced or explored in Indian cinema before, as we’ve done in this film. So, going down that path of intimacy, vulnerability is possible only when you know the director doesn’t do it for the eyes. Rather he is doing it because that’s where the characters are coming from, through their journey and their experiences.”
Deepika added That she would like to call her character in Gehryan not “bold” but more “raw and real”. She said, “All I can say is that I have never done anything like this before. I have done films and a lot of characters which are love stories or relationship dramas. I want to say that my character in Gehrayan is bold. Me too Don’t want to say bold because (k) the way we understood bold in our films and the characters that we have seen. So, I would say raw. I think, for me, this character compares to some of the other characters I’ve played. Too raw and too real. Emotionally, it’s totally stripped down and naked in that sense, and totally vulnerable. I think to be able to do that on screen, it’s got to be too deep. Have to come from the place. That’s not to say that I haven’t experienced that before. But, not to the extent where I have to dig really deep and go to places that aren’t really pleasant, and that really doesn’t work for me. Not having pleasant experiences in my life, as well as having to deal with mental health issues.”
About working with Deepika for the first time, filmmaker Shakun Batra shared that the actor has brought a lot from his personal experiences. He said, ‘This is my first time with Deepika. His appetite and the amount of work he has done on it has completely amazed me. What I was trying to explore with Deepika is her own experiences, and what she can bring to the film. It has a lot to do with her anxiety, her life, her experience in various relationships, how can we make that part of the story. It was about portraying her true self in character. ,
Shakun also shared that it was important for an actor to take a decision before stepping into Deepika’s character. “I also feel that without being judged, you can’t step into these shoes. Actors are conscious of their image and it is always scary to play brown characters. But, with Deepika, I don’t even have to wear them once. There was no need to reassure things. I think she’s confident enough that you can tell her what you feel about the character, and she’ll step in and understand it without any fear. She All I want to know is to find the root of that behavior and then there it is. I can’t watch this film without her, with anyone else,” concluded the filmmaker.
Deepika is playing the role of Alisha in the film, which is slated to release on Amazon Prime Video on February 11. The film also stars Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday, Dhairya Karva, Naseeruddin Shah and Rajat Kapoor.
