Delta orders 100 Boeing 737 planes

Delta is ordering 100 737 MAX 10 airplanes, the largest in the line built by Boeing, potentially giving the manufacturer extra momentum after a troubled rollout of its most advanced planes.

Delta has the option of buying 30 more aircraft as the airline seeks to meet the growing demand for travel.

Boeing has struggled to keep up with its European rival Airbus after a pair of 737 MAX planes crashed in a short time, killing 346 passengers and crew.

Shares of The Boeing Company were up 4% at the opening bell on Monday.

Airlines are aggressively trying to reduce costs and the 737 MAX can help them do that. Delta Air Lines said Monday that the airplane, which can seat 230 people, will reduce fuel consumption and emissions by 20% to 30% compared to the planes it will replace.

Shares of Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines Inc. gained 2%.

Airlines have attempted to absorb the growing demand for flights. While they struggled between lockdowns and quarantines during the COVID-19 pandemic, they are experiencing immense demand from millions of people eager to travel now that vaccines are readily available and restrictions have been eased.

Last week Delta reported that it earned Revenue near pre-pandemic levels got a boost in the second quarter in the form of $735 million of packaged planes and higher fares. But rising fuel prices and the cost of canceling more than 4,000 flights in May and June were a drag.

The deal with Delta, announced at the Farnborough International Air Show near London, provides an additional shot for Boeing. The producer announced last week that it delivered June is the best month for delivery of 51 passenger and cargo aircraft, in more than three years. Of those deliveries, 43 were for his 737 MAX airliner.

Regulators around the world halted Boeing’s 737 MAX jet in March 2019, five months after an Ethiopian Airlines jet crashed in the Java Sea, five months after another MAX flown by Indonesia’s Lion Air crashed. US Federal Aviation Administration approved Boeing’s 737 MAX to fly in November 2020.

Delta has a fleet of more than 850 mainline aircraft, including more than 450 Boeing 717s, 737s, 757s and 767s.
