Deputy Cristina Casol was fired

For some time now, the Junts per Catalunya has experienced a kind of cold war between its two main sectors. A war that has now intensified with the decision of the executive of the party of Carles Puigdemont to expel the deputy Cristina Casol.

Cristina Casol was removed from the Junts parliamentary group after criticizing “gender harassment” within her own party. A complaint was unsuccessful because an independent investigation concluded that the facts could not be substantiated. However, this issue was the spark that started a fire that could be decisive for the future of training. And it was never ruled out that this whole war could end in division.

Cristina Casol is part of the nucleus near Laura Borràs. With his disqualification after being convicted of corruption, the party president was left alone and the ‘borrasista’ sector was shrinking within the Junts. It maintains a group of faithful such as Jaume Alonso Cuevillas, Francesc de Dalmases or Aurora Madaula (the latter, vice president of the Parliament, is on leave also after criticizing the “silent violence” of colleagues).

On the other side there is the leadership of the party led by Jordi Turull, Albert Batet or, although he does not want to be wet in public, Carles Puigdemont. This sector, which replaced the Junts, redoubled its attacks on unruly people who were part of ‘borrasismo’. And more so when the alleged abuse suffered by Casol has not been proven. Today, the war is experiencing one of the most tense chapters of this difficult war that pits two sectors against each other.

Insults and threats

Several media outlets pointed out that Monday’s executive meeting was not good. Both sectors regularly launch criticisms and threats. In fact, Laura Borràs would have threatened the management of Junts that the decision to sack Casol would have consequences. Cristina Casol herself reaffirmed her accusations of harassment and warned that she will put the case in the hands of her lawyers. On the other hand, Aurora Madaula, who participated in the meeting through telematics, spoke of “witch hunts” and “inquisitorial” attitudes of the party leadership.

What will happen now to Junts?

Although 26 of the 32 fellow representatives asked Cristina Casol to give up her deputy record, she refused to do so. This means that, if there is no agreement, he will be a non-attached deputy and Junts will have 31 deputies. However, beyond the loss of a seat, Carles Puigdemont’s party faces the danger of a split that could destroy the party.

Because the possibility that the president and his colleagues decide to leave is on the table. And this could mean a problem for the leadership of the Juntaire. Because, although the sector of Laura Borràs has less and less organic weight within the party, they have significant support from the bases. The hot potato that is on the table of Jordi Turull and Carles Puigdemont is not easy to handle. And Laura Borràs has threatened them, predicting that the decision will have consequences.
