Pitcher Matt Dermody was released by the Boston Red Sox Friday, a day after making his first major league start and said he was sorry for posting a homophobic tweet two years ago.
The 32-year-old left-hander was designated for assignment as part of a series of roster moves. Boston has seven days to trade him or place him on waivers.
The Toronto Blue Jays released pitcher Anthony Bass earlier Friday, a day after the right-handed reliever said he did not find an LGBTQ+ social media post he shared last month hateful.
Boston also activated outfielder Adam Duvall from the 60-day disabled list after recovering from a broken wrist, moved left-hander Chris Sale (inflammation of the left shoulder) to the 60-day disabled list and left-hander from Triple H. K Joe selected the contract for Jacques. -A Worcester. The Red Sox said infielder Emmanuel Valdez was traded to Worcester after Thursday night’s game against Cleveland.
Dermody allowed three runs in four innings against the Guardians, hitting a three-run home run by Jose Ramirez, and lost 10–3. He was 2–2 with a 4.50 ERA in eight starts and one relief appearance with Worcester.
Dermody’s social media post was from 2021. It has since been removed, but the screenshots are still in circulation.
The Red Sox said they were unaware of Dermody’s tweet when he signed with the team in January. Once he was found, team officials met with him, who underwent mandatory anti-discrimination and harassment training in March.
Afterwards, Dermody expressed some remorse for his actions.
“I’m sorry for this tweet it was hurtful and meant to hurt a lot of people,” he said. “The last thing I want to do is hurt people. I think a lot of people feel I’m against a certain group or whatever. But I’m all for Go to heaven
