“Development of RNA technology will help with future pandemics”

Yvelise Barrios del Pino is an immunologist in the Canary Islands and a member of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Society of Immunology.

—What are the features of these new vaccines, which will be implemented from Monday?

—The virus is adapting and the person’s immune system is putting pressure on the virus, which turns to avoid that response. It’s easier to do with the antibody response, which we’ve seen over the course of these months with variants that we call new because the antibodies we make are not able to bind to those regions of the virus and escape that reaction. We must bear in mind that it is not only antibodies that protect us, but that a cellular response occurs. We immunologists demand that this cellular response be evaluated at the same time because we know that the cellular response to escape is more complex, the virus cannot change and if it does change it does much more for This is not possible so that this cellular response does not maintain defense.

Which is better, pass the virus or the vaccine?

—The best part is hybrid immunity, which involves vaccination and passing on infection because we know that immunity to vaccination is very powerful at the blood level, but this response is less effective at the mucosal level. The first place the virus enters is through the respiratory tract and after getting infected we are left with mucosal immunity.

—Could one person who received three doses and with few symptoms pass on the virus as much as another person who has had more symptoms?

The number of antibodies we measure immediately after being infected is related to the clinic. The more diagnostic we see, the more antibodies. If three doses have been given and the infection has subsided slightly, it is because the vaccination has served its purpose, that if we become infected we need to be hospitalized with serious complications or death. Not there. Its aim is hybrid immunity which is acquired through vaccination and infection.

Do you expect a new virus similar to the coronavirus?

—There is a session in this Congress called One Health, which means One Health. For strategies to protect us, they have to be global in vaccination and understand that zoonoses, animal infections, we have to know them well because many of them jump to humans and that’s when we have problems. If they are pathogens against which we have no previous immunity, as happened with COVID, we will be in trouble. The ARN technology tool has gone through such a brutal development that it will help us in the future if new threats of this type are in place for us to respond quickly.

There are still anti-vaccines.

Vaccine opponents are people who do not know who are unable to digest the information of scientists. This campaign is intoxicated with political aspects.
