Wimbledon, England ( Associated Press) — This time, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal were on opposite sides of the draw.
Djokovic will be top seed and Nadal second in the men’s section at Wimbledon in the absence of Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev. The grass-court Grand Slam Championship announced its seeding on Tuesday.
World number one Medvedev will not be able to play in the 2022 edition due to the All England Club’s veto against players from Russia and Belarus following Ukraine’s invasion. Medvedev is Russian.
Ranking second, Zverev was ruled out of the French Open due to injury.
This made Djokovic and Nadal the two main seeds, so they would not meet until the final.
Not so at Roland Garros last month, when Nadal defeated Djokovic in the quarterfinals for his 22nd Grand Slam title – a record number.
In the women’s draw, there will be a champion of 23 majors. Serena Williams returned to the competition, but was not the top seed.
The draw will take place on Friday and the tournament will begin on Monday.
From 2021, seeding in both male and female branches is done on the basis of ranking.
Williams hasn’t played since retiring in the first round of Wimbledon last year. He was invited to a singles draw at the All England Club and could meet anyone in the first round.
First in the ranking, the Polish iga Swietec will be the top seed at Wimbledon.
